CBL Announces First North American Renewable (NAR) Exchange-Traded Product that Meets Green-e Certification Requirements

NEW YORK, SYDNEY – 22 May 2019 – CBL, a leading spot exchange operator for environmental commodity markets, and APX, a leading provider of infrastructure solutions to energy and environmental markets, have today announced the first exchange trade of a North American Renewables (NAR) product that meets specific certification requirements in the Green-e® Renewable Energy Standard for Canada and the United States.

CBL recently connected to the North American Renewables (NAR) registry, which enables market participants to electronically transfer voluntary and compliance Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) to and from all states connected to NAR.

“Providing an efficient and transparent method to sell and buy RECs tracked in the North American Renewables Registry (NAR) is an additional benefit to users of the leading renewable energy registry in North America” said Lars Kvale, Head of Business Development, APX.

CBL is the first electronic trading venue to list products that meet specific certification requirements in the Green-e® Standard, in two tracking systems NAR and ERCOT, adding to its already wide selection of renewable energy and sustainable products.

“CBL is helping expand the use of renewable energy that meets the highest standard of quality in North America,” said Jeff Swenerton, communications director at Center for Resource Solutions (CRS), which administers the Green-e certification program. “By linking with two leading electronic tracking systems, CBL is reducing friction in market trading, helping to connect clean energy buyers and sellers.”

By listing products that meet the supply requirements for participants in the Green-e® Energy certification program on the exchange, current and future market participants have access to increased transparency and liquidity of these products, which until now have relied on over-the-counter trading.

Nathan Rockliff, Managing Director (US) at CBL said “CBL is excited to work with a trusted global leader in clean energy certification, and the addition of products that meet Green-e® supply requirements to our existing market screen is a reflection of increasing demand from the market for sustainable products.”

Green-e Energy is the leading renewable energy certification and verification program in North America. Administered by the nonprofit Center for Resource Solutions, the program provides independent, third-party certification to ensure that certified renewable energy meets strict environmental and consumer-protection standards. Green-e® Energy certified retail sales reached over 60 million megawatt-hours (MWh) in 2017, with over 1.1 million retail purchasers of Green-e® certified renewable energy, including more than 54,000 businesses.

CBL has been supporting environmental markets since 2010, bringing innovation, liquidity and transparency to environmental commodity markets. This news follows CBL’s recent announcement with Xpansiv related to the successful transfer of a spot contract based on authenticated production data in a regulatory-compliant marketplace, which paves the way for a suite of new data-driven products to come.
