Project Canary Joins Xpansiv to Empower Responsible Natural Gas Market
SYDNEY, NEW YORK, SAN FRANCISCO, DENVER — Project Canary, the leading ESG environmental data partner, is joining Xpansiv’s Digital Fuels Program to further the companies’ mutual objective: empowering the market for responsibly sourced natural gas and other fuels.
- The Xpansiv DF Registry allows stakeholders to meet growing demand for fuels differentiated by ESG performance.
- Project Canary to verify responsible natural gas production by combining environmental-performance assessments with continuously monitored data.
The Digital Fuels (DF) Program governs Xpansiv’s data-driven registry and exchange for issuing, transacting, and retiring products that value the environmental-performance attributes of fuels—including natural gas, crude oil, hydrogen, and aviation fuel.
Project Canary will deliver methane-emissions data to the Xpansiv DF Registry tied to specific units of gas production, gathered through continuous, real-time monitoring systems (measured in sub-parts per million) and quantified methane emissions at production facilities across the U.S. and Canada.
“We’re seeing rising demand for responsibly produced natural gas backed by accurate, independent methane-emissions measurements,” said Jeff Cohen, Xpansiv Director of Sustainability. “In combination with high-volume, real-time data collected directly from well pads, the Project Canary data pipeline establishes the gold standard for registering digital ESG assets representing individual mmBtus of produced gas.”
“Gas buyers are speaking up—independent high-fidelity site-level data is increasingly going to be a requirement to sell,” said Will Foiles, Project Canary Co-Founder and COO. “This granular environmental data should be a point of pride and differentiation for resilient, climate-focused producers looking to sell their products at home and abroad. The technology is now available to provide detailed assessments and around-the-clock emissions quantification. Estimates are no longer acceptable.”
Project Canary’s unparalleled approach combines continuous monitoring data with industry leading natural gas certifications, providing a holistic view of both environmental impacts and asset-based risk. Project Canary’s TrustWell certification standard verifies responsible natural gas production, which can be registered on Xpansiv’s DF Registry, then transacted and retired to make measurable progress toward a sustainable future.
“Project Canary data is a powerful addition to the Digital Fuels Program,” said Xpansiv Head of XRegistries Andrew Pisano. “That begins with primary production data directly onboarded from well operations and refined by Validere.”
“Validere sees Project Canary as a perfect complement to our collective focus on attaching the best data to the molecule to drive efficiencies in the energy supply chain,” said Validere CEO and Co-Founder Nouman Ahmad. “The Canary team has an unparalleled drive in pulling critical, real-time methane data into these ecosystems.”
