Xpansiv Completes Landmark Digital Natural Gas™ Transaction with Methane Certification

SYDNEY, NEW YORK, SAN FRANCISCO — Xpansiv, the global market for Intelligent Commodities™, today announced the completion of its first Digital Natural Gas transaction through the Xpansiv Registry.

The transaction involved the purchase of natural gas with an environmental-performance profile based on immutable, real-time data.

Xpansiv’s Digital Natural Gas (DNG™) is part of a new asset class that conforms to the Digital Fuels Governance Framework, enabling markets to differentiate natural gas based on methane-emissions intensity and other critical metrics. Facilitated by global financial services group Macquarie, the DNGs were generated and registered on the Xpansiv platform by Pacific Canbriam Energy and transferred to Energir, a Montreal-based utility and energy services provider.

The DNGs represent responsibly produced natural gas and include a certification from Equitable Origin (EO), an independent, non-profit organization that provided additional site-level assessment on key ESG indicators in conformance to its EO100TM Standard for Responsible Energy Development.

“Customers and stakeholders are seeking to participate in the energy transition, and through this initiative we’re pleased to offer natural gas sourced with greater transparency, aligned with ESG thinking,” said Vincent Regnault, Énergir Director of Gas Supply and development of Renewable Gases. “This milestone transaction marks significant progress toward reaching our target of contracting 100% of our system gas supply through our Initiative for the Responsible Procurement of Natural Gas by 2030.”

“Macquarie is engaged in a variety of projects to advance the energy transition,” said Craig Fisher, a Senior Managing Director at Macquarie. “The establishment of a digital registry is an important innovation that establishes unprecedented levels of transparency and detail, which will further catalyze the certified natural gas market.”

DNGs built on the Xpansiv Registry encode production information collected directly from meters and production-facility instrumentation, validated by independent data refiner Validere. These continuously monitored readings and site-specific emission factors are inputs that determine methane-emission intensities, tracked to individual natural gas production streams.

Canbriam’s DNG assets—including the methane-emission intensity and EO certifications—were transferred via the Xpansiv Registry to Macquarie, which retired them on behalf of Energir to enable certified environmental claims.

“DNG demonstrates the innovative, end-to-end capabilities of the Xpansiv platform to ingest data from multiple sources, calculate new environmental performance metrics, and enable producers to issue certificates—stored on the Xpansiv Registry—to ensure integrity and an auditable provenance chain back to source,” said Xpansiv Sustainability Director Jeff Cohen. “By empowering producers to benefit from superior production methods, we enable a market-based incentive for producers to implement and follow best practices, so buyers can obtain a certified, rigorously calculated, auditable environmental claim inclusive of attributes that were previously invisible.”
